"The word advent means "expectation." What advent can do for us is create a sense of hope." - Louie Giglio
Beginning the on fourth Sunday before Christmas, Advent is the season of reflection and preparation ahead of our celebration of the nativity of Jesus and in anticipation of His second coming. This year Advent began on Sunday 27th November and will end on December 24th.
Traditionally, churches are decorated with garlands and lights. And with wreaths made up of candles surrounded by greenery. Each candle represents a different aspect of Jesus' coming:
Week 1: Hope - anticipating His second coming
Week 2: Faith - preparation for the coming King
Week 3: Joy - joy for the whole world
Week 4: Peace - the angels' proclaimed, "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men."
Some churches will also include a fifth candle in the centre which is lit on Christmas day to represent Jesus, the Light of the World.
In our homes we observe Advent traditions by lighting an Advent candle or by opening a window on an advent calendar in anticipation of Christmas day.
For those wishing to journey prayerfully through Advent there also are many online devotionals available, like this one by Stuart and Jill Briscoe
May God grant you and your loved ones the blessings of hope, faith, joy and peace this Advent season
